I'm not a big fan of local films, but I do watch a few for a good laugh, though 60% would stress me out by the end of the film. Malaysian filmmaker, Yasmin Ahmad's films are among those I'd consider watching [other than Bernard Chauly's!], hence I ended up in GSC watching MUKHSIN.
Summarizing it all up...
Mukhsin is the prequel to Sepet & Gubra, and so throughout the story, you'd see the several characters from the other two movies directed by Yasmin. Basically it tells about Orked's childhood.
Orked is ten. Mukhsin is twelve. They are the best of friends with one common and uncomfortable human experience:
What happens when your very best friend - someone with whom you've been learning to do cool best-friend things like climbing trees, flying kites, riding bicycles and even getting into fights with other kids - starts to develop romantic notions about you?
Watching Mukhsin, has fired pelts of ricocheting childhood memories inside me, figments of my past which I thought I have long let slip. No, I did not fall in love with my best friend nor was there any kind of romance going on except for my love to my rabbits! I'm talking about the whole climbing trees and stuff. There's no way I'm getting further into this.
So...Kudos to Yasmin for such a movie and for picking up two awards at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival!!! [mari kawan2 kita jerit "Malaysia Boleh" <--- elaynie poyo!]
